13 suffer bullet injuries in clash

Barasat, May 27: Thirteen persons suffered bullet injuries in a clash between BJP and Trinamul Congress supporters in Sandeshkhali, North 24-Parganas, today.

The BJP’s Samik Bhattacharya, who lost the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat to Trinamul’s Idris Ali, said all those who suffered injuries belonged to his party and accused Trinamul of the attack.

Shankar Chakraborty, a BJP leader in Sandeshkhali, said Trinamul activists had attacked a group of party supporters holding a feast to celebrate Narendra Modi’s swearing-in. “The Trinamul activists fled after being outnumbered. Today, activists of the ruling party hurled bombs and fired shots at our supporters,” he said.

Trinamul denied involvement in the attack. “Our party has nothing to do with any political clash in Sandeshkhali. I have come to know that two groups had clashed over the control of fisheries,” said minister Jyotipriya Mullick.

The 13 with bullet injuries have been admitted to SSKM hospital. Medical superintendent Dipanjan Bandopadhyay said: “Although none of them appear critical, they have been kept under observation.”

State BJP president Rahul Sinha said he would “request the Centre to send a team to investigate the attack”.
