Khate keeps crown

Imphal, May 25: Defending champion Vilaseir Khate of Nagaland retained his menís singles title in the third North East Tennis Cash Prize Tournament at Officers Club, Lamphelpat, today.

Khate defeated compatriot K. Whorie 7-5, 6-3 to claim the title. Whorie got the runners-up title. Nagaland got another boost when they claimed the menís doubles title as well beating Manipur in the final. The menís doubles saw Nagaland pair of Vilasier Khate and Keneisezlie demolish Manipur pair of T. Brojen and T. Ribhaskar by 6-0, 6-4 sets for the title. The lone saving grace for Manipur came in the veteran doubles as T. Tuleshor and N. Kangjamba Meitei defeated compatriots N. Dilip and P. Pritam by 6-4, 7-5 and 6-0 sets to claim the title.

Football: The All Manipur Football Association feted the victorious women footballers who won the championís title of the 20th Senior Women National Women Football Championship in Golaghat.

Chess: Second seed Rk. Bhogen Singh won the championís title of the 24th Kh. Anou Singh Memorial State Level Chess Tournament at Kwakeithel in Imphal West. First seed S. Premjit Singh ended on the seventh spot.

Bhogen Singh tallied a total of 6.5 points for the top spot with a progressive score of 27.5 and went on to collect Rs 7,000 with the trophy. G. Inao Sharma got the runners-up title with six points and a progressive score of 22 and won Rs 5,000.

O. Ningthem, N. Kishan, N. Bangkim, Y. Pritam, S. Premjit, L. Koireng, H. Jacky, N. Pari Meitei, Rk. Lenin and Th. Samson finished in the top 10 in this order with varying cash prizes.
