Uttarpara, May 25: Around 50 workers of Hindustan Motors owing allegiance to the INTTUC today sat on a dharna outside the factory gate in Uttarpara, demanding that the suspension of production be withdrawn immediately.

The workers threatened to hold protests every day till the plant was reopened. Hindustan Motors yesterday suspended production in the plant citing financial losses.

Uttam Chakraborty, the secretary of the INTTUC-led union at the plant, said: “We demand that the plant be reopened immediately. We also want the government to intervene in the interest of the 2,600-odd workers.” The president of the BJP’s Hooghly unit, Krishna Bhattacharya, visited the Uttarpara plant today and spoke to some workers.
