Hailakandi/Guwahati, May 20: The Lakhipur District Sports Association has alleged “discrimination” against it by the Assam Cricket Academy in selecting players from its district unit in Cachar during the under-16 open trial at Silchar.
The association’s cricket secretary, Rajdeep Goala, has alleged that only two players were among the 45 players retained for further scrutiny from the three-day camp, and that the academy’s panel of spotters had ignored a number of talented players from the district.
The camp ended at the Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium in Silchar yesterday.
Altogether 370 promising players from Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Lakhipur, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts participated in the trial.
Academy selector Satya Gopal Chakraborty dismissed the allegations and said the players were shortlisted on the basis of performance during the trials and there no “discrimination” against any district.
According to the academy’s plan of action, the trial was organised for players from across the state irrespective of their districts and was held at six different venues to facilitate participation by the youngsters at closer locations instead of a central camp in Guwahati.
Nearly 30 players will be finally selected from across the state for grooming at the academy in Guwahati.
Chakraborty also said the panel of spotters would finalise the Silchar list of players on completion of the trials in all the other zones.
He said the final round of the coaching schedule would be prepared in a manner to avoid a clash with examinations of the students.
A similar three-day trial also concluded at Tinsukia yesterday.
Academy head coach Subhrajit Saikia, who was among the spotters there, said nearly five players managed to impress the spotters in the trial where 204 youngsters from Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts participated.
