Engineering student rape charge on classmate

Krishnagar, May 18: A Calcutta girl studying engineering in a private institute in Krishnagar has alleged that she was raped by a classmate to whose rented flat she had gone to study after class.

The 22-year-old accused, who hails from Barauni in Bihar, has been arrested. He was today remanded in two weeks’ judicial custody.

According to police, the girl, 22, was raped on Friday evening. “From the complaint lodged by the girl and the interrogation of the accused, we have learnt that she was on good terms with the youth and would often visit his flat to study together. The girl stayed with some friends in another place about a kilometre from the boy’s house,” said an officer of Krishnagar police station, adding that the complaint was lodged yesterday evening.

The girl’s father, who works with a private firm in Calcutta, refused to speak.

Soon after the complaint, the girl was sent for a medical examination. The police said tests had indicated rape.

“We have been informed by Krishnagar Sadar Hospital that there are indications of rape. But we are yet to get the final medical report,” said a police officer.

The private engineering institute distanced itself from the incident, saying it had not heard about it.

“The management has no knowledge about the incident. You are saying it happened outside the institute’s premises. Neither the police nor anybody else has informed us about it so far,” an official of the institute said.
