Wife’s wish: temple trip with Modi

Ahmedabad, May 16: Narendra Modi’s wife Jashodaben wishes to offer prayers with her husband “if he agrees”, her brother Ashok Modi said today.

“Now that Modi has acknowledged her as his wife, my sister wants to offer prayers with him at Ambaji, but only if he agrees to it,” Ashok said, referring to a prominent temple to the Goddess Amba in north Gujarat.

Modi, 63, acknowledged Jashodaben, 61, as his wife for the first time in his affidavit filed before the Election Commission in this election.

Jashodaben, a retired schoolteacher, had married Modi 46 years ago but he left her soon after. She is said to be a devout person who has not eaten rice for four decades, hoping for a reunion with her husband, family sources said.

“She will eat rice only after she offers prayers with her husband. Her wish for a reunion with her husband will be fulfilled, if not in this birth then the next,” Ashok said.

Jashodaben lives with brothers Ashok and Kalpesh at Unjha in north Gujarat.

Asked where she was today, Ashok said: “She has gone on a pilgrimage to Ganga Sagar (near Calcutta) and then plans to visit the Jagannath temple in Puri. She will be back next week.”

When Modi became chief minister, Jashodaben had said she prayed for him and predicted he would become Prime Minister. She now hopes her prayers to pray with him would be answered, sources said.
