Headless body in rivulet

The decapitated and naked body of a woman was recovered from a dry rivulet at Hethu, a village behind Birsa Munda Airport, around 10km from the heart of Ranchi on Thursday.

A sharp-edged weapon (bhujali) with bloodstains on it was also recovered from the rivulet with police suspecting that it was used to behead the unidentified victim, who appeared to be within 25-30 years.

Jagannathpur police, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, said that they received information about the body around 11am and recovered it by 12.30pm.

“The woman is yet to be identified. We have also recovered the murder weapon, a bhujali that was smeared with blood. We have sent the body to RIMS for post-mortem,” said superintendent of police (city) Anup Birthare.

He further said that the condition of the body suggested that the murder was committed at least two days ago. “The body was partially decomposed,” Birthare added.

Hatia deputy superintendent of police Nisha Murmu, who visited the spot, said they were trying to locate the head.

“We were able to ascertain the woman’s possible age on the basis of physical examination. The place where the body was lying is used as a funeral site. Usually, people avoid going there,” he added.
