After letting go of a chance to officiate at Yonex India Open Super Series last month, city-based shuttle umpire Alok Nobel is now gearing up to handle technical aspects of two top-notch international badminton meets.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) recently appointed Nobel as a technical official for Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, both of which will be held at Siri Fort Stadium in New Delhi from May 18 to 25.
“I feel honoured to have been nominated as a technical official for two major badminton tourneys,” Nobel told The Telegraph.
Golmuri-based Nobel, an office superintendent with Damodar Valley Corporation, has been part of BAI’s technical team in several tournaments. After starting off as an umpire in 2000, he went on to officiate in several national tournaments, including the Youth Commonwealth Games (Pune, 2008), World Badminton Championship (Hyderabad, 2009), Commonwealth Games (New Delhi, 2010) and National Games (Ranchi, 2011).
“BAI also nominated me as a technical official for the Yonex Open India Super Series, which I could not attend owing to official commitments. But, I would not like to miss out on Thomas Cup and Uber Cup. I have already sent my consent to the apex national body,” said Nobel.
While Thomas Cup was first held in 1948-49, Uber Cup started in 1956-57. Both tournaments are played simultaneously and are among the top events of World Badminton Federation.
