Don jail shift for fair polls

Patna, May 4: The Siwan district administration shifted former RJD MP Md Shahabuddin from the Siwan divisional jail to the central jail in Gaya this morning.

Shahabuddin, whose name once spelt terror in Siwan and its neighbouring districts, was serving life term in the Siwan divisional jail after being convicted for kidnapping and murdering CPI-ML (Liberation) worker Chote Lal Gupta. Sources claimed that Shahabuddin was taken to Gaya from Siwan under tight security before dawn.

The supporters of the former Siwan strongman described the district authority’s move as an attempt to dampen the spirit of the party workers at a time when Shahabuddin’s wife Heena Shahab was contesting the elections from the Siwan parliamentary constituency on the RJD ticket.

Trashing the allegation, Siwan district magistrate-cum-returning officer Devesh Sehra said: “The step has been initiated to ensure free and fair elections in the Siwan Lok Sabha constituency, considered to be tough from the security point of view.”

Superintendent of Siwan divisional jail Radheshyam Suman echoed similar views.

Shahabuddin was allegedly terorrising voters from jail.
