- Army unit to celebrate golden jubilee

Jorhat, April 29: Trick mules, a dog show, para-motors and daredevils on motorcycles will be part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the headquarters of the 41 sub-area of the Indian Army here on Friday.

“We are planning a major event for the people of Jorhat and adjoining areas at the court field here where the people will get to know more about the army,” a senior official based at the sub-area told The Telegraph.

The 41 sub-area headquarters here was set up on May 1, 1964, after the Chinese aggression, as the communication zone sub-area. It was located close to the air force station at Rowriah and moved to the current location at Lichubari in 1968.

During the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict, the base was moved to Dharmanagar in Tripura but was moved back to Lichubari here again the next year.

The official said the mules and dogs would were an important part of the army and play crucial roles.

“Mules are still being used in various parts of the Northeast, specially in inaccessible areas of the region. These animals are great help for the army in ferrying goods to the forward posts,” he said.

The official said many people do not know the role of these animals and the celebrations would be an opportunity for them to have a glimpse of their importance.

The three-day show will also include dogs displaying their various capabilities as far as maintaining security is concerned.

“Dogs from the Assam Rifles dog unit here will put up various performances regarding explosives, arms and drugs detection. They will also participate in sports activities,” the official said.

Of late, the Assam Rifles dog unit has been training the canines to be dropped by parachutes in inaccessible terrain of the region, to help fight insurgency.

Several dogs from the unit have completed this particular training and are currently engaged in various parts of the region.

“The public are likely to get to see the dogs being dropped from helicopters in parachutes during the celebration. But this particular event will depend on the weather,” another official said.

The official said the aim of the main event is to get close with the people.

“People should know more about the army and we are planning this event at the court field. All will be invited,” the official said.

The official said the 41 sub-area headquarters has fulfilled its role by providing support to the troops in the remote states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
