Woman killed in highway mishap

A 26-year-old woman was killed on the spot and 13 persons were injured when the pick-up van they were travelling in turned turtle at Makulakocha on NH-33 in Chandil police station area, about 17km from the steel city, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The injured, four of whom are women, were rescued by the police early in the morning and rushed to MGM Medical College and Hospital, where condition of two is stated to be critical. The deceased woman has been identified as Saraswati Soren, a resident of Amjore village in Patamda.

The victims were contract workers and were returning home after work at an under construction house at Azadnagar in Jamshedpur.

One of the victims, Sujan Mahto, said it was about 2.40am when they boarded the van and started for their homes in Patamda.

“The van was ferrying over 30 persons, including women. While negotiating NH-33, the driver accelerated despite our objections. While taking a turn at Makulkocha, the van overturned and fell into a gorge,” said Mahto, who has sustained multiple injuries on his right hand.

He added they lay at the mishap scene till 4 am, when a patrolling party from Chandil rescued them.

Chandil OC Ashok Kumar Singh said the mishap took place due to reckless driving. “The deceased succumbed to head injuries. Among the 13 injured, two have been hurt on the head and are in a serious condition. The rest have sustained limb injuries,” said Singh.
