Man rescued

Shillong, April 28: Meghalaya police in East Khasi Hills district today rescued a person confined by a group of villagers for allegedly practising witchcraft.

Bakhraw Kharryngi of Tyrsad village under Mawngap police outpost, about 40km from here, was apprehended Mawliehpoh villagers around 9pm last night on charges of practising witchcraft. He was tied up and confined for the whole night at Mawliehpoh Lower Primary School, East Khasi Hills superintendent of police M. Kharkrang said.

The SP said Kharryngi was brought to Tyrsad Umktieh around 8.45 this morning and confined until police rescued him around noon.

Kharryngi filed a complaint against King Rani, Bantei Rani, Aikos Mary Sawkmie, Roy Rani, headman of Mawliehpoh village, and Kral Rangslang, headman of Pomsanngut village, for wrongfully confining him and instigating villagers against him.

Kharkrang said Mawngap outpost in-charge was probing the incident.
