Stray bullets injure two

A guard deployed by an agency that collects cash from banks and refills ATMs accidentally fired his rifle in front of AC Market on Theatre Road, injuring two persons, on Monday evening.

The incident occurred around 5.30pm when Lallan Prasad Gupta was loading his rifle outside 1 Shakespeare Sarani, while his colleagues were collecting cash from the Axis Bank branch on the third floor of the mall.

The sound of the firing and the sight of two persons dropping on the floor had initially left people in the area terrorised, sources said. “We thought terrorists had launched an attack. The confusion, however, cleared in a minute as the guard who held the rifle ran to help the injured persons himself,” said a hawker who was present near the spot.

One of the injured was a guard posted outside the mall while the other was an employee at one of the shops in the shopping complex.

“The two injured are Saurav Singh and Gobindo Das. Singh is the guard of the shopping complex while Das is an employee at a shop in the mall. Das was passing in front of the refill vehicle when the rifle got accidentally fired,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station. The injured were taken to hospital, where their condition was “stable”.

Gupta has been charged with attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
