Imphal, April 26: A court in Manipur’s Thoubal district today sent the main accused in a cyber crime case to a juvenile home.

The judge, S. Ibomcha, sent Kongbrailatpam Dushmanta Sharma and his cousin Kongbrailatpam Harideva Sharma, the accomplice, to the government juvenile home at Takeyl, 3km from here.

The judge sent the duo to the juvenile home after their relatives claimed they were under 18 years of age.

The court will meet on May 3 to decide whether they are actually underage.

The court also remanded Kongbrailatpam Commando, 31, a cousin of the main accused, in judicial custody for 15 days.

Dushmanta Sharma is charged with uploading a morphed nude picture of a 15-year-old girl on the social networking site Facebook.

He put the face of the victim on a picture of a nude girl.

Police said Dushmanta created a fake account using the name of the victim on March 25 and uploaded the morphed picture on April 4 on the site as the profile photo of the fake account.

The two cousins were charged with helping Dushmanta commit the crime, the police said.

“Acting on a complaint by the parents of the girl, we started an investigation, which finally led us to Dushmanta Sharma, the main accused,” a senior police officer said.

The police arrested Dushmanta Sharma on April 11. He tried to escape from Thoubal police station on April 17 and was caught from the gate of the police station immediately after he walked out.

The next day, the superintendent of police, Thoubal, K. Radheshyam Singh suspended three police personnel of the station for negligence of duty for the escape attempt by the accused.

The police subsequently arrested the two accomplices, following interrogation of the main accused.

The father of the victim said the family learnt about the doctored Facebook photo of his daughter on April 11 from friends and lodged a complaint at Thoubal police station.

Thoubal district headquarters had been agitating for many days demanding “severe punishment” to the main culprit.

A large crowd gathered at the complex of the Thoubal court today while the three were being produced in the court.

The student community of the district took out a rally in Thoubal town today demanding punishment to the culprits.

Later the students organised a sit-in.
