7-year jail for rapist

Bokaro, April 26: A Bokaro court today sentenced a 36-year-old man to seven years’ imprisonment for raping his neighbour at Pindrajora, about 25km from Bokaro steel city, in 2011.

Chotu Karmakar, who has been in jail since the incident, was found guilty under Section 376 of the IPC. He was also slapped a fine of Rs 1,000. Chotu, who hails from Pindrajora, had raped the 25-year-old victim, a mother of two, at dagger point on April 10, 2011.

“The woman was alone on that night. Her husband had gone to meet a relative while her two children were at their grandmother’s place. Chotu forcibly entered her room around 11pm. He gagged her with a cloth and raped her at dagger point,” a source said.

When the woman succeeded in getting out of Chotu’s clutches, she picked up a sword kept in the room and attacked him till he fell down unconscious in a pool of blood. Her shrieks woke up the neighbours, who informed police.

Chotu was arrested and sent to hospital as he had been grievously injured in the attack. Later, the victim lodged a case with Pindrajora police.
