BJP candidate car crashes

Barrackpore, April 21: The BJP candidate for Barrackpore, R.K. Handa, was among five persons injured as his SUV collided with another car on Kalyani Expressway this afternoon.

The driver of the other car was declared dead in hospital.

Handa, a former IPS officer, who was admitted to a private hospital in Barrackpore initially, was shifted to a hospital in Calcutta. A crack was found in his pelvic bone after an X-ray was done, sources said.

Police sources said Handa had left from his Salt Lake residence in his SUV around noon to attend a public meeting in Palta, North 24-Parganas.

A relative of Handa accompanying the BJP candidate, Raunak Shukla, was also injured. He said: “It was around 1pm when we were travelling along the Kalyani Expressway. We spotted a car coming at great speed from the opposite direction.” But before the driver of Handa’s SUV could swerve, the two vehicles crashed head on.
