Barrackpore, April 21: The BJP candidate in Barrackpore and retired IPS officer, R.K. Handa, was among five persons injured as his SUV collided with another car on Kalyani Expressway this afternoon.
The driver of the other car was declared dead in a Barrackpore hospital.
Handa, who was admitted to a private hospital in Barrackpore, was shifted to another hospital in Calcutta later in the evening. An X-Ray done on him revealed a crack in his pelvic bone, sources said.
Police sources said Handa had left his Salt Lake home in the SUV around noon to attend a public meeting in Palta, North 24-Parganas.
Raunak Shukla, a relative accompanying the BJP candidate, was also injured. Shukla said: “We were travelling along the Kalyani Expressway around 1pm when we saw a Maruti Omni hurtling down from the opposite direction.”
Shukla added that before the driver of Handa’s SUV, Jay Singh, could manage to swerve the vehicle to avert a collision, the two cars crashed head on near Dangadighila area of Khardah, leaving one dead and five others of both vehicles injured.
Those injured apart from Handa and Shukla were Jay Singh, the BJP candidate’s driver, and two other persons travelling in the other car. The driver of the other car, Sudipto Bose, 52, suffered head injuries and died.
Residents alerted by the screeching sound of the crash immediately rushed to help and admitted the injured to the local hospital.
C. Sudhakar, the deputy commissioner of Barrackpore, said a case of rash and negligent driving had been initiated.
