Seizure from power official’s flat

Sleuths of the anti-corruption branch on Friday raided the Beleghata apartment of a director of the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd and seized 3kg gold ornaments and Rs 15 lakh, which police said were disproportionate to his income.

The accused, Asish Ghoshal, could not be arrested as he managed to give police the slip.

“We seized gold ornaments weighing 3kg, Rs 15 lakh and documents of investments worth Rs 45 lakh from the flat,” said an officer of the branch, which has been set up to take action against corrupt state government employees.

Ghoshal had earlier served as chief engineer of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd.

“He joined the power development corporation as director a year ago,” said the officer. “We had information that Ghoshal was involved in corrupt deals and owns properties disproportionate to his income.”

Body found

The guard of an under-construction building in Salt Lake Sector V was found hanging in a ground-floor room on Friday. Ashwini Mondal, of Behala Parnasree, was suffering from depression, said police.
