Brother palm cut for CM rally wish

Islampur, April 11:A Congress supporter in North Dinajpur was today accused of hacking the palm of his younger brother, a Trinamul loyalist, for saying he would attend Mamata Banerjee’s rally in the district today.

Mohammad Abdul, the elder brother, had been arrested for chopping off the hand of a college student in 2009. His brother Abdul Khalek has been admitted to North Bengal Medical College Hospital in Siliguri. Mohammad Abdul is absconding.

According to police, both Abdul Khalek, 42, and Mohammad Abdul, 45, own farmland and are known toughs in their village Sujali, 20km from Islampur town.

The brothers have several cases of intimidation and assault pending against them.

Around 11am today, when Abdul Khalek was getting ready to go to Chopra to attend Mamata’s rally, Mohammad Abdul told him not to step out of home.

“Around 40 of our supporters had gathered in the area to leave for Mamata Banerjee’s meeting. Mohammad Abdul warned our workers against going to the rally,” said Kamaluddin, the Trinamul Yuva secretary of North Dinajpur.

“There was an argument and Mohammad Abdul attacked his brother with a chopper. He hacked off Abdul Khalek’s right palm and ran away,” Kamaluddin said.
