NCW issues notice to Mulayam over his ‘boys-make-mistakes’ rape remark

New Delhi, Apr 11 (PTI): The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday sent a notice to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav over his reported remarks on rape during an election rally in Moradabad.

The Commssion also sent a letter to the Election Commission of India to take cognizance of the matter and take action to curb such incidents in future.

Terming Mulayam's remarks “highly irresponsible”, Mamta Sharma, Chairperson of the NCW, said “we have issued a notice to Mulayam Singh Yadav over his remarks on rape during an election rally.”

“It was a highly irresponsible statement coming from a public figure like him and he should publicly apologise to all the women of the country,” Sharma said.

The Commission took cognizance of media reports and along with the notice, sent a letter to the ECI to take steps so that such incidents are not repeated in future.

Questioning the death sentence to three men who were convicted last week for two gang-rapes in Mumbai, the SP chief had asked, “should rape cases be punished with hanging? …Ladke, ladke hain. Galti ho jati hai (Boys are boys. mistakes happen sometimes),” he had said.
