A lorry mowed down a 38-year-old man in front of SSKM Hospital on Wednesday night, minutes after he had admitted his wife to the hospital with third-degree burns. She died on Thursday afternoon.
Police said CCTV footage caught the lorry running over Ashok Dhalla, a trader from Howrah, while he was walking on Harish Mukherjee Road.
Dhalla’s wife Rinku, 32, was admitted to SSKM Hospital with 90 per cent burns and her condition was critical.
“The husband broke down at the burns ward and wanted to stay near his wife. He was not allowed because it was a female ward,” said an officer.
He left the hospital around 11.45pm. “The CCTV camera at the SSKM gate caught him walking towards the AJC Bose Road crossing. The accident occurred when Dhalla reached the middle of the road,” said the officer.
