NGO issues candidate report card

Patna, April 9: Bihar Election Watch, an NGO, on Wednesday came out with a report giving criminal, financial and other details of candidates in the second phase of elections in the state.

Munger, Nalanda, Patna Sahib, Jehanabad, Ara, Buxar and Pataliputra will vote on April 17. The report says 30 of the 116 candidates in the fray face criminal cases while 23 have declared they have serious criminal cases, related to murder, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation and theft, against them. The BSP tops the list in candidates with criminal cases, followed by JD(U), BJP and RJD.

The data is based on affidavits candidates filed with their nomination papers. BSP candidate Dadan Pahalwan from Buxar tops the list with 22 cases, six of them of serious nature and 16 others under various IPC sections.

Also, 33 of the 116 candidates are crorepatis. Anil Kumar Sharma, JD(U)s Jehanabad candidate, tops the rich list with assets worth Rs 849 crore. BJPs Patna Sahib candidate Shatrughan Sinha is next with assets worth Rs 131 crore. Kumar Rajiv, Independent candidate from Patna Sahib, has declared zero assets. Eleven candidates with assets worth over Rs 50 lakh have not declared income tax details.
