Nagaon take 100-run lead

- Goswami & Zhimomi give visitors edge

Guwahati, April 6: Nagaon took a vital 100-run first-inning lead against home side Guwahati on the third day of the final of the Elite Group Senior Inter-district Cricket Tournament for the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy at Barspara Cricket Stadium here today.

Resuming at an overnight score of 170 for three, Nagaon piled up 395 runs in 150.2 overs this afternoon before losing all wickets. Guwahati were all out for 295 in 102 overs yesterday. At stumps today, Guwahati were 56 for one in 16 overs.

It was once again Ranji players Dhiraj Goswami and Hokaito Zhimomi who played a crucial innings in the middle order to fashion the lead for the visitors.

Goswami topscored for his side with a patient knock of 78 runs, which was laced with six boundaries and a six, while Zhimomi contributed a useful 58 off 99 balls.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Amjad Ali, who is also a Ranji player but has been out of favour for a couple of seasons, also chipped in with a steady 51 (5x4) and tail-ender Ashok Saini scored a patient 31.

Eshaan Ravi (67, 8x4, 1x6), Debojit Baruah (45, 3x4, 1x6) and Bhaskarjyoti Konwar (25, 1x4) had yesterday set a sound foundation for Nagaon.

Abir Chakraborty was the pick of the Guwahati bowlers, taking four wickets for 107 runs, and Yadvendra Singh chipped in with three wickets for 84.

In their second innings, Guwahati lost opener Hrishikesh Tamuli quite early to the bowling of Debojit Baruah. However, Sunzow Brahma and Rahul Hazarika held the fort till stumps.
