AFA trials for senior squad

Guwahati, April 6: The Assam Football Association (AFA) has invited 38 footballers for the selection trials at Golaghat from April 10 to name the state squad for the 20th Senior Women’s National Football Championship to be held at Dibrugarh and Golaghat from April 27 to May 11.

AFA secretary Ankur Dutta said the players would have to report at the venue for the trials on Wednesday.

The tournament assumes significance because the national team will be selected from it, said AFA secretary Ankur Dutta.

“The camp will be looked after by our coach Kamala Kanta Singh,” Dutta said.

“We have opted for Golaghat as the venue for the trials because Assam is pitted in group D, which will play its preliminary league in Golaghat where the semi-finals and final will also be held. It will help the players acclimatise themselves with the conditions there,” he added.

Assam is pitted against last edition’s semi-finalists Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Pondicherry and Uttarakhand. Assam bade adieu to the tournament’s last edition from the league phase itself.

Altogether 20 states, including railways, which have been given direct entry for the first time, will feature in the tournament this time.
