Librarian found dead in flat

A 32-year-old college librarian was found dead in his Bijoygarh flat on Thursday evening.

Samanvay Bhattacharjee, who lived alone in the 500sqft flat on the second floor, was found “sleeping” when father Chirantan Bhattacharjee turned up around 6.30pm, police sources said.

The history graduate who had joined Bijoygarh College as librarian two months ago was in shorts and a T-shirt. When the father’s repeated calls failed to wake up the librarian, Chirantan sprinkled water on his face.

Samanvay did not budge even after that. The father, a retired state government official, then called a doctor who declared Samanvay dead.

“He was lying on his left side. Later, when I looked at him closely, I saw bloodstains below his nose. There were scratch marks on his cheeks,” the father said. “My son’s cellphone and the cupboard keys were missing.”

Chirantan also said he had seen a rickshaw-puller coming out of the apartment when he was entering.

“We are trying to find out whether the flat door was open or closed when Chirantan Bhattacharjee went there. The post-mortem will reveal whether the death was homicidal,” said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
