Bikes seized in Arpita show

Balurghat, March 31: The district election cell of South Dinajpur seized 28 motorcycles and detained eight bikers in Hili today for taking part in a road show organised by the Trinamul Congress for Arpita Ghosh, the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Balurghat, for allegedly violating the model code of conduct.

The bikers did not have permission from the district election cell for taking part in the road show.

According to the rules, if a party organises a rally/road show, permission has to be taken from the district election cell and the number of bikes and cars involved, has to be mentioned. The district election cell then gives a sticker or permission on a piece of paper.

The road show which started at 9am today was organised by the Hili block Trinamul Congress.

Arpita Ghosh travelled to three gram panchayats in Hili and the road show ended around 1pm.

According to a source, there were more than 100 bikers in the road show. When the bikers were returning from the Hili bus stand area, officials from the election cell of the district started conducting a random check to see if the bikers had permission.

“The bikers did not have valid papers and permission to take part in the rally. Therefore, we have seized 28 motorcycles and detained eight people from Hili on charges of violating the model code of conduct. They will be punished according to the law,” said Tapas Chaudhury, the district election officer of South Dinajpur.

Trinamul has said those who were detained are not activists of the party. “There was a flood of people on the streets of Hili to see our candidate Arpita Ghosh. There were people from all classes. Those who have been detained, I think, are ordinary people who might have come to Hili for a different purpose,” said Kalian Kundu, a leader of the Hili block of Trinamul.
