Trinamul poll plea to Parishad

Jalpaiguri, March 30: The Jalpaiguri district Trinamul Congress has appealed to the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad to campaign for the ruling party’s candidates in the Lok Sabha polls and highlight the initiatives taken by the state government for the tribal population.

The Parishad had already announced that it would support Trinamul in the Lok Sabha elections and is slated to issue a directive to the effect to the cadres in the first week of April.

Chandan Bhowmik, the Jalpaiguri district president of Trinamul, said today: “We have appealed to Parishad leaders to join us in the election campaign. As they have extended support to Trinamul, our party wants them to speak about the initiatives taken by the government for the comprehensive socio-economic development of the tribal population in north Bengal and the state as a whole.”

“If Trinamul can campaign along with the Parishad leaders in the tribal-dominated areas of Jalpaiguri district, which are spread across Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar Lok Sabha constituencies, it will largely help us,” he added.

Tezkumar Toppo, the Bengal general secretary of the Parishad, said being an apolitical organisation, it had limitations in sharing dais with Trinamul during the election campaign.

“Nonetheless, we will discuss Trinamul’s appeal at the state conference. As of now, we cannot say if the Parishad will join the campaign or not,” he added.

However, Toppo said the outfit would put up posters and placards during the campaign to highlight the Trinamul government’s welfare measures.
