Karuna ‘amnesty’

Chennai, March 26: DMK president M. Karunanidhi today said his party was willing to grant a “general amnesty” to the Congress to “keep communal forces away at a later stage”.

Addressing an election meeting in Chennai, Karunanidhi said the Congress was friendless not only in Tamil Nadu but in other states also since it had been ungrateful to parties that had stood by it. “To escape from blame in the 2G scam they fixed (former telecom minister A.) Raja,” he said, adding that the Congress had only itself to blame.

Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, another accused in the case, had also spent time behind bars.

“Even now if the Congress is willing to reform, if they can swear they will stop communal forces, the DMK is willing to forgive them and support them. Not to get votes now but in the form of a general amnesty to keep communal forces away at a later stage,” he said.
