Gangster with pistol chases rival

A man brandishing a pistol ran after another fleeing for his life along the railway tracks of Cossipore with at least 100 curious onlookers watching the chase on Wednesday morning.

It was not a film shoot but a clash between two gangs. They hurled bombs at each other, leaving two gang members wounded. They were admitted to RG Kar hospital.

Police sources said criminals Kalia and Chandan and their aides fought a pitched battle along the rail line.

One of Kalia’s aides, Pintu, chased Chandan through a maze of shanties till they reached the tracks and started running along them, sources said. Pintu was closing in on Chandan when his men came to his rescue and hurled crude bombs at the rivals.

Kalia’s aides retaliated with bombs that burst near Pintu. He was seriously wounded along with another gangster, the sources added.

A case has been registered with Dum Dum GRP. According to railway sources, the gangsters hurled bombs near the Chitpur car shed.

“GRP officials reached the spot and nabbed Pintu and three of his accomplices while Chandan and the others managed to escape. They were later handed over to officers of Dum Dum GRP,” said a senior Eastern Railway official.

Sources said Pintu and Chandan were armed but did not fire their weapons.
