Hojai get the better of Dhubri

Hailakandi, March 23: Hojai handed a four-wicket defeat to Dhubri in the Hailakandi zone’s JK Baruah Trophy inter-district under-19 cricket tournament at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium here on Saturday.

Resuming at overnight 10 for no loss, Dhubri were all out for 171 in 42.5 overs in the second innings. After the departure of opener Ajijul Haque at 13, Sumit Dey and Arif Sheikh’s fourth-wicket partnership of 77 runs consolidated the innings. While Sumit Dey scored 31, Arif Sheikh contributed 41 runs.

Hojai’s Sunil Chauhan hauled five wickets for 53 runs.

Chasing 122 runs in the second innings, Hojai achieved it in 34.4 overs losing six wickets, thanks to a hurricane 51 off 31 balls by middle order batsman Atique Ahmed. Md Shamim Ahmed and Sunil Chauhan also chipped in with 24 and 34 runs respectively.

Hojai took a 43-run first innings lead on the first day of the two-day fixture by bundling out Dhubri for 98 in 44.5 overs in the first innings and posting 141 all out in 43 overs.

Mahin Chaudhury and Jagjit Roy of Dhubri took three wickets each, giving away 25 and 34 respectively.

Hojai will play Rangiya on March 25 and 26.

Trekking: A 50-member contingent from the Assam Mountaineering Association will be flagged off for a high-altitude trekking expedition to Sandakphu from here tomorrow.

Kickboxing trial: The Assam Kickboxing Association will organise a selection trial to name the state team for the WAKO India Pro National Kickboxng Championship to be held in Odisha from April 11 to 13.
