Different target for Rathore

New Delhi: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is all set to put his sporting career on hold to succeed in politics.

“Shooting can wait, but the call of the people cannot,” the double trap star told The Telegraph after he was named the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Jaipur rural constituency for the Lok Sabha polls. He is pitted against CP Joshi of Congress, considered a heavyweight in Rajasthan state politics.

“I know there are lots of important international championships scheduled this year, but now my first priority is to reach out to the people and do something for them.”

Rathore, 44, is still a force to reckon with in double trap. However, at the start of the season, he wrote to National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) asking it not to consider him for tournaments in near future. He had by then joined the BJP and was contemplating a career in politics.

“My experience with Army and in the field of sports would help me in politics, too,” said Rathore, who won around 25 international medals for India.
