District cell to educate voters

Golaghat, March 18: The district administration here has constituted a systematic voters’ education and electors’ participation cell for educating voters and ensuring their participation in the Lok Sabha elections.

The cell is headed by Jadav Saikia, project director of district rural development agency.

The primary duty of the cell is to create awareness among eligible persons for enrolment of their names in the electoral rolls and encourage voters for greater participation in the election process.

It will also take up awareness campaigns on electronic voting machines in certain pockets.

Anupjyoti Choudhary, district information and public relations officer, who is a member of the cell, said such a cell has been constituted at the district level for the first time.

“The Election Commission wants to improve voters’ participation in the electoral process and disseminate the message of ethical voting. Accordingly, we have prepared an action plan which includes staging of street plays, pasting posters, taking out motorcycle rallies. We will engage educational institutions, volunteers and NGOs in bringing about complete participation of voters in the election process,” Choudhary said.

He said according to the instruction of the Election Commission, a media certification and monitoring committee has been formed with Julie Sonowal, deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer, as the chairperson.

The committee will scrutinise, identify and report cases of paid news to the returning officer.

The Golaghat election district, comprising 95 Golaghat and 96 Khumtai Assembly constituencies, falls under Kaliabor parliamentary constituency where 2,660 first-time voters will exercise their franchise.
