Supply spared

The breaches in the water pipe at Garden Reach will take “at least six days” to repair but supply is unlikely to be disrupted significantly.

Till Friday evening, 36 hours after the breaches had been detected, civic engineers could not reach the pipe that runs 15ft below Paharpur Road. A CESC cable was preventing the civic team from digging, officials said.

“CESC will start diverting the cable from Friday night. We will resume digging only after the diversion is over,” civic chief engineer (water supply) Bibhas Kumar Maity said on Friday evening.

An engineer in the water supply department said it would take “at least six days” to repair the breaches.

Officials said people living in the 50sq km command area of Garden Reach waterworks will continue to get filtered water as the water supply department has decided to run the intake pumps round the clock to compensate for the loss of water through the breaches.
