Bhupen Trophy on track

Guwahati, March 13: Singhco Digitronics Media Solutions (SDMS) Pvt Ltd, the organisers of the Bhupen Hazarika Trophy T20 platform cricket tournament, have zeroed in on at least five franchise aspirants but are still looking for a title sponsor with barely a month remaining for the tournament to begin.

In its first meeting with franchise aspirants recently, SDMS Pvt Ltd director Hrishikesh Mazumdar claimed to have impressed five companies of the state to own teams. “At least five aspirants are enthusiastic about owning teams. We are, however, yet to get a positive response from Barak Valley and lower Assam,” he said.

The proposed league-cum-knockout tournament will involve eight teams.

About a title sponsor, Mazumdar said, “We have met some of the national and multinational brands but are still waiting for a final nod without which we cannot be sure of their co operation. However, I am sure we will be able to organise the tournament in a befitting manner with support from our well-wishers and franchisee subscriptions.”

The organisers are proposing franchisee subscription of Rs 5 lakh and prize money of Rs 15 lakh for the champions.

About the auction of players for the teams, Mazumdar said SDMS has engaged a team of experts associated with the Jharkhand Premier League and Odisha Premier League for the selection of players from across the state by holding a trial here shortly. “The franchises will be able to buy players from that pool,” he said.
