Wait & watch on Bodoland: Ranjit

Guwahati, March 12: Trinamul candidate for the Kokrajhar constituency Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary today said he would appeal to his voters to wait and watch what the one-man committee, set up by the Centre to study the feasibility of carving out Bodoland from Assam, recommends.

While Assam Pradesh Trinamul Congress has been saying that the party was in favour of only granting autonomy to the indigenous communities with more financial and administrative power instead of creating a separate state, Mooshahary said he did not know if the party had any such stand on the issue.

“If the party has any stand, I do not know. The issue of Bodoland is under negotiation. It will not be the right time to give a comment,” said Mooshahary.

The issue of carving out Bodoland from Assam is expected to play a significant role in the election in Kokrajhar constituency.

All Bodo Students’ Union (Absu) and some of its allied organisations such as the NDFB (P) have decided to field a candidate who will raise the Bodoland issue in Parliament.

Jonogosthiyo Oikyo Moncho, an organisation formed by the non-Bodo communities, has decided to field their own candidate who would be able to raise their concerns in Parliament.

Talking to reporters this morning, Mooshahary said he had joined the Trinamul after considering all aspects.

“For six months I spoke to different political parties and other organisations. I even thought of contesting the election as an Independent. But I did not have enough resources and manpower. At the same time I was impressed by the development made in Bengal by the Trinamul. That is why I decided to join the party,” said Mooshahary.

Assam Pradesh Trinamul Congress president Dwipen Pathak today said the party would contest in nine constituencies — Dhubri, Barpeta, Mangaldoi, Nagaon, Tezpur, Kokrajhar, Silchar and Gauhati.

“Besides Kokrajhar, we have finalised the name of candidate for Lakhimpur constituency. While Mooshahary will fight in Kokrajhar constituency, Dhebar Gohain Barua will fight in Kokrajhar,” he said.
