Legislator ‘breaches’ model code

Bongaigaon, March 5: Just a few hours after the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls, a legislator from Bongaigaon district allegedly breached it by distributing tubewells among the beneficiaries of the sar areas at Chalantapara near Jogighopa in the district this afternoon.

Chandan Sarkar, Congress party legislator of Abhayapuri (South), today reached Chalantapra Girls’ High School field and distributed 87 tubewells, under the sar development scheme, among the beneficiaries, alleged AIUDF’s Bongaigaon district committee. Sarkar could not be contacted.

AIUDF district general secretary Alauddin Sharif said his party demanded strict action by the Election Commission against Sarkar for violating the model code of conduct. He said his party would take a decision on the matter tomorrow.

Bongaigaon deputy commissioner Shankar Prasad Nandi said he was “unaware” of the incident and asked to contact the SDO (civil) of North Salmara, Saranga Pani Sarma. Sarma, responding to the query, said he had no knowledge about the distribution as he was addressing a news conference this afternoon. Sarma said he would “verify the matter” and if needed, would “issue a notice” to the legislator.

Bongaigaon, Abhayapuri (North) and Abhayapuri (South) Assembly constituencies in Bongaigaon district fall under the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency.

Silchar MP Kabindra Purkayastha yesterday donated an ambulance to the association from his MPLAD fund at a function held in the Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium.
