A suspended sub-inspector who was in jail custody for allegedly abetting the trespass bid on 9A Short Street has been named as an accused in another property grab attempt.
Noor Ali was produced in the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court on Monday and remanded in police custody till March 7 in connection with the second property grab case.
The high court has directed the detective department of Calcutta police to launch a probe against Ali in the case, in which he has been slapped with conspiracy, trespass and theft charges.
Ali has been accused of helping a woman named Zahara Bakshi, 89, enter an apartment in Embassy Building on Shakespeare Sarani when it was apparently under lock and key.
“Complainant Raghulal Bagri stated that his apartment — 5F in Embassy Building — was under lock and key when Zahara Bakshi, with the help of Noor Ali, broke into the flat, illegally occupied it and stole cash and ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh,” said a police officer.
This complaint was lodged last August.
Sources said no action had been taken on Bagri’s complaint, prompting him to move the high court.
“The high court had ordered the detective department of Calcutta police that the case be investigated by an officer ‘of rank no less than the assistant commissioner’. The supervising officer should be of the rank of deputy commissioner,” said a police officer.
According to the complaint, Bakshi, Ali and others have charges of criminal conspiracy, theft and trespass against them.
“We have taken Noor Ali into custody following an order by the court. He has been remanded in police custody till March 7,” said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
Ali was attached to Shakespeare Sarani police station as sub-inspector when he was arrested a few weeks after two men died in a shooting spree at 9A Short Street in November 2013 in an apparent bid to protect the property from trespassers.
The sleuths have said Ali had been in touch over the phone with the people who were involved in the trespass.
The police have also claimed to have learnt from other accused in the 9A case that he had taken bribe to sit on all complaints of trespass on the same property.
