Money on mind, cousin killed youth

The young Birsanagar grocer, who was found dead at home on Friday evening, was bludgeoned with a hammer for money by a debt-ridden relative, police said on Sunday.

The breakthrough in the murder case has been claimed following the arrest of Kashidih resident Pavan Bajpayee (35), a distant cousin of 27-year-old Rahul Shukla, from Purulia in Bengal on Saturday evening. The entire booty — Rs 21,000 in cash and gold and silver ornaments — has been recovered, besides the murder weapon, Baypayee’s escape bike and two mobile phone handsets.

East Singhbhum SSP Amol V. Homar confirmed that Bajpayee killed his cousin Shukla for money. “He is a petty businessman in Mango and was neck-deep in debt. He found out that murder was the quickest way to cash,” he said.

According to police, Bajpayee visited the Shukla residence around 4pm on Friday. The cousins chatted for 15 minutes after which Bajpayee sent an unsuspecting Shukla to fetch water for him. No sooner did the latter return to the living room, Bajpayee attacked him with the hammer.

“The assailant dealt two heavy blows, causing his victim to fall flat on the floor bleeding. For the next half an hour, Pavan Bajpayee opened the almirah with its key, took out cash and ornaments and then left for Tatanagar station, where he had his bike parked. On the way, he dropped the hammer in a field in Golmuri area. Later, he caught the Tata-Chhapra Express to flee to his in-laws’ house in Purulia,” the SSP said.

In Purulia, Bajpayee pawned the ornaments — necklace sets, gold chains, rings and ear studs — to a jewellery shop and was waiting for cash when a police team from Jamshedpur rounded him up.

Homkar said they zeroed in on Shukla’s cousin as the potential culprit after the victim’s mother told police that Bajpayee had made an abortive attempt to kill her in the past.
