Cops in dark over rape case

Ranchi, Feb. 27: Police have made little headway in finding out details about the gang rape victim from Andhra Pradesh, who is undergoing treatment at Garhwa Sadar Hospital for the past two days.

The 20-something woman, who was found in an unconscious state with no clothes on near a government hospital at Nagar Utari in Garhwa on Monday morning, has not been able to say much because of her weak condition. Her inability to converse either in Hindi or English has further complicated matters.

“We got a local woman, who understands a little bit of Telugu, to speak to her. From whatever she told her, it appears that she belongs to Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh. Her husband is a small-time businessman and the couple has two children. She got separated from her family while boarding a train,” said a police officer.

The woman has also revealed that she was gang-raped at different locations for more than two weeks and was not given anything to eat.

A nurse at the Nagar Utari hospital was the first to come to the woman’s rescue after being informed about her lying on the road by her husband. She took the victim to the hospital, where her treatment began. The woman was shifted to sadar hospital on Tuesday.

“We are hopeful of starting a full-fledged inquiry after a few days when her condition improves and she is able to speak properly,” said Garhwa superintendent of police S.K. Jha.
