Calcutta, Feb. 25: The East Midnapore CPM today deferred its meeting called on Thursday to identify suspected Lakshman Seth loyalists involved in last week’s attack on senior party leaders, apparently to pre-empt Alimuddin Street from taking harsh action against the former MP.
The district leadership said its move to postpone the February 27 meeting was an “internal matter’’. But sources said loyalists of Seth in the district secretariat wanted to send a message to the leadership that any harsh action against the leader would not augur well for the district unit and may lead to division in the ranks.
The decision to defer the meeting came on a day a Tamluk court framed charges against 55 people, including Seth, in the Nandigram armed recapture case of 2007. The CID, investigating the case, had chargesheeted 88 people.
