Rape cuffs

A man in his mid-30s was arrested after Chitpur residents rescued a 25-year-old girl from his clutches and lodged a complaint of gang rape on Monday morning. The accused has been identified as Ram Mural Gupta, a driver by profession. Four of his associates fled, the police said.


A 23-year-old youth named Julfikar Laskar was arrested on Monday in connection with the abduction of Praveen Chhajer, who runs a graphic designing firm on Tollygunge Circular Road. A 9mm pistol, three magazines, eight rounds of ammunition and eight SIM cards were seized from him. Four others had been arrested for the kidnap, allegedly masterminded by Sanjit Purkayet, an undertrial lodged in Alipore Central jail.

Teacher in net

A woman teacher of a south Calcutta school has been arrested for allegedly stealing the cell phone of a security guard of the institution and making “threat calls” to the headmistress from it. An officer of Lake police station said the teacher had put her own SIM card into the phone and made the calls.


A 33-year-old resident of Chetla Road has been arrested for allegedly threatening a trader’s wife over the phone that he would shoot him if she failed to pay Rs 5 lakh. Police said the accused, Ajoy Adhikari, alias Neelu, was known to the woman. Adhikari was picked up on Sunday night following a complaint by the trader, Arup Roy Chowdhury.
