Bid to kidnap examinee

Burdwan, Feb. 24: Four youths allegedly stalking a girl for the past few days tried to drag her away on motorcycles when she was on her way to write her Madhyamik exam in Burdwan town today.

Alerted by screams of the girl and her mother, the residents caught the youths, aged between 20 and 24 years, and handed them over to police. The girl was escorted by the police to the exam centre, 2km away.

District superintendent of police S.M.H. Meerza said the police would escort the girl to the exam centre for the remaining days.

The four youths have been charged with molestation and attempt to kidnap.

According to the complaint lodged by the mother of the 16-year-old girl, the youths had been harassing the girl for the past few days and had been following her wherever she went. “When I encountered them yesterday and said I will complain to the police, they came home a few hours later and threatened us with dire consequences,” the mother said.

The girl’s father works with a private firm in Calcutta.
