Don’t give up on life, experts tell youths

- Lecture series hosted by Marwari College

Ranchi, Feb. 22: Know yourself, identify your weaknesses and then try to overcome them.

This was the message of Janak Pandey, vice-chancellor of Patna-based Central University of Bihar, to Ranchi students on Saturday.

The academic was in capital for delivering the second Geeta Chakravarty Memorial Lecture, instituted in the memory of the late psychology professor of Ranchi University.

The topic for the lecture, held at the auditorium of Marwari College, was ‘Social-psychological perspective on youth as life stage’.

Pandey said it was an art to know one’s own self. The academic added that one should believe that he/she could overcome the worst of problems and never give up on life.

“Over 40 per cent of our country’s population falls in the age-group of 13-35 years and described as youth. It is important to transform the competence of this group into the strength of the society,” he said.

Besides Pandey, assistant professor at Kanke-based Central Institute of Psychiatry Sakshi Rai delivered a lecture on ‘Suicides among youths’.

Rai spoke of how frustration in youths of today led them to choose the path of suicide.

“A person tends to choose death over life when he/she feels lonely, helpless, distressed or depressed,” she said.

Rai explained how a good upbringing prepares a person to cope up with tough situations in life.

She added that regular counselling of those with suicidal tendencies also helps address their problems scientifically.
