US fine on Indian

Washington, Feb. 20 (PTI): An Indian-American owner of a billing firm and a BJP campaigner has been fined $3.3 million (Rs 20 crore) along with three affiliates for overbilling the US government in health care plans.

Sanjay Puri’s Engage Medical and the others inflated bills for key cardiac tests, the US attorney’s office in Maryland said as it announced the penalty to settle the charges.

Puri, also the president and CEO of Alliance for US India Business, has been leading a campaign in favour of the BJP. He had organised a news conference for Arun Jaitley in Washington a few years ago. Puri was not immediately available for comment.

“When medical providers enrich themselves at taxpayers’ expense by falsely representing that they provided expensive procedures, the government must be vigilant in pursuing fraudulent claims,” said attorney Rod J. Rosenstein as he announced the settlement.
