International golf meet from Feb. 20

Guwahati, Feb. 17: The first Assam International Diplomats Invitation Golf Meet will be held at Kaziranga Golf Resort in Jorhat, 290km from here, from February 20 to 23.

The event is being organised by Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd, in association with Assam Golf Association as the technical partner.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi will formally inaugurate the meet on February 22 after the diplomats return from a safari of the Kaziranga National Park the previous day.

The ambassadors and diplomats taking part in the international golf meet include Sri Lankan high commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam, Indonesia ambassador Rizali W. Indrakesuma, Philippines ambassador Benito B. Valeriano, Cambodia ambassador Yous Makan, Kazakhstan ambassador Doulat Kuanshev, Zimbabwe ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe, Brunei high commissioner Dato Paduka Sidek Ali and deputy head of European Union delegation Pavel Svitil, among others.

Golfers from Assam and the Northeast will also take part in the event.

Taking a personal initiative in organising the meet for the first time, chief minister Tarun Gogoi convened a high-level meeting at his official residence on February 13 to finalise the detailed itinerary for the tournament.

Gogoi took stock of preparations, including travel, accommodation and other arrangements for the visiting diplomats.

Managing director of Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd Anurag Singh made a PowerPoint presentation in this regard.

Gogoi asked the officials, including the members of the committee constituted for the purpose, to leave no stone unturned to make the event, the first of its kind in the region, a grand success, official sources said.

Gogoi said the diplomats from several countries would get an opportunity to experience the splendour of wildlife, tea and rich cultural heritage of Assam during their stay and directed the ATDCL to publicise the event properly.

The meeting was attended, among others, by minister for industries and commerce Pradyut Bordoloi, chief secretary Jitesh Khosla and chief coordinator of Kaziranga Golf Resort Gitopam Hazarika.
