Rape slur on rail attendant

Feb. 14: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a coach attendant of the Ajmer-bound Garib Nawaz Express this morning when the empty train was going to Kishenganj from New Jalpaiguri station after a clean up.

Government Railway Police rescued the girl from Aluabari Road station and the accused has been arrested.

The girl later lodged a police complaint at New Jalpaiguri accusing the attendant of raping her.

“According to the girl, around 3am today, an attendant of the Garib Nawaz Express allegedly dragged her into the empty train while it was at the New Jalpaiguri station and raped her while the train was travelling towards Kishenganj,” said Ujjwal Bhowmik, the superintendent of railway police, Siliguri.

“While the empty train was crossing Mangurjan station (46km from New Jalpaiguri), the station manager noticed the girl in one of the compartments and informed the GRP at Aluabari Road station (57km from New Jalpaiguri). The train was stopped at Aluabari Road and the girl rescued. After the girl narrated the incident, the coach attendant was taken into custody,” Bhowmik added.

The accused, Bisweswar Das, 30, is a resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar.

The girl has been sent for a medical examination at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.

The Garib Nawaz Express originates from Kishenganj and the train is often taken to New Jalpaiguri for cleaning and maintenance.

After the clean up, the empty train usually travels to Kishenganj without any stops in between.

“This morning, the empty train was heading to Kishenganj. It seems that the coach attendant took advantage of the situation as passengers board the train only in Kishenganj, 87km away. The station manager of Mangurjan raised the alert when he noticed the girl in the empty train,” said a source.

The girl was rescued at Aluabari around 4.30am.

“We are trying to find out what the girl was doing at New Jalpaiguri station at 3am and whether any acquaintance or relative was accompanying her. We also want to find out if anyone saw her being dragged into the train which was not moving. Her statement needs to be verified,” a GRP official said.

He added that during preliminary investigation, the girl has told them that her mother works as a domestic in Siliguri and they both were supposed to take a train to Panjipara (80km from New Jalpaiguri) in North Dinajpur this morning to visit her elder sister who stays at Panjipara.

“The girl has told us that she was going towards a stall in the platform at New Jalpaiguri to buy some food when the coach attendant grabbed her and dragged her into the train. We are yet to know the details about her and her residence. The girl’s mother could not be traced till Friday late evening,” said the official.
