Man held for attempted rape

A 33-year-old man once acquitted of the charge of raping a teenager has again been accused of disrobing, trying to rape and criminally intimidating her.

The accused, Sheikh Shahzada Bux, has been arrested following a complaint by the girl, a resident of Palm Avenue.

The complaint lodged with Karaya police station states that Bux, a resident of Tiljala, had punched, disrobed and tried to rape the 17-year-old at her home around 9.15pm on Thursday.

“Shahzada Bux had earlier been arrested on the charge of raping the girl who has lodged the complaint against him on Thursday night. A court had acquitted him in the previous case on November 30 last year. We have started an investigation on the basis of the second complaint,” said joint police commissioner, crime, Pallab Kanti Ghosh.

A year ago, local youth Aminul Islam had set himself ablaze in front of Karaya police station after the police had allegedly refused to register a complaint of rape against Bux.

It was only after Aminul’s immolation bid that the police had agreed to register the rape complaint.

The teenager, in her statement before a magistrate, had alleged that Bux had raped her but turned “hostile” during the trial.
