Trade rivalry clue in murder

Siliguri, Feb. 13: Police said a preliminary probe has suggested business rivalry was behind the murder of a lady railway contractor and realtor at Hatiadanga near here yesterday and four persons had been detained in connection with the incident.

Rina Ghosh, 35, had been shot from a close range while she was driving home yesterday. She died on the spot.

“We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder. However, based on the information we have gathered so far, it seems the attack was the fallout of business rivalry. Our officers are gathering information about the acquaintances of the woman and her business contacts,” said S. Rajkumar, the assistant commissioner (east) of Siliguri metropolitan police.

According to police sources, four persons have been detained in connection with the case.

“We have come to know that in 2002, a case was filed against Ghosh at Bhaktinagar police station under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. So, we are trying to find out the exact nature of her business,” said an investigator.

The police have also talked to Pijush Ghosh, the deceased’s husband, who is a supplier of stones and bricks.

“The husband has given us details about her business links. We are trying to find out whether she had any rivalry with anybody else in her area of businesses, that is railway contracts and real estate. We want to know if assailants were hired by somebody over business rivalry,’ said a source.
