19-year-old shot dead

A 19-year-old youth was gunned down barely a few hundred metres from his house in Garden Reach on Tuesday night.

Police said Mohammad Azharuddin, a Class XII student, went to have tea with two friends on Tuesday night and did not return home. Later, his body with a bullet in the head was found near his house.

Based on the complaint filed by the victim’s father, Mohammad Khaled Qureshi, police arrested Mohammad Sayed Ali alias Pervez and are looking for the victim’s uncle, Mohammad Shaukat Ali alias Pappu.

Senior police officers said the motive behind the crime was not clear.

Pappu lost his son Tanveer last year in a bike accident and had lodged a murder complaint against Azharuddin with Bidhannagar (South) police station, said the police.

“It seems Pappu believed that his son was murdered. We are verifying whether that incident has anything to do with Azharuddin’s death,” said joint commissioner of police (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.

Azharuddin, a student of Arya Parishad Vidyalaya, had tea with friends Zahir Abbas and Zahid Hossain before they headed home, the police said. “Police officers came to know about the shooting around 11.10pm,” said Ghosh.

“Pappu is absconding. The murder weapon is yet to be found,” said an officer of Garden Reach police station.
