Angry flood victim berates UK minister

Feb. 11: Philip Hammond, the defence secretary, was tackled by an angry volunteer battling the floods in Berkshire who claims that ministers and the Environment Agency have abandoned victims.

Hammond was left embarrassed after being berated by an angry volunteer who claimed that residents in flood-hit areas have been “abandoned” by ministers, the emergency services and the Environment Agency.

Hammond was tackled for nearly 7 minutes by Su Burrows, who is co-ordinating volunteers in the village of Wraysbury, Berkshire.

Burrows complained that villagers had been left without police and military support as they struggle to cope with the flooding crisis engulfing large parts of the south of England.

The government has faced heavy criticism for failing to react quickly enough to the extreme weather that has left thousands of homes inundated.

Burrows said that the Environment Agency is not “taking us seriously”.
